Japan travel becomes affordable as yen exchange rate strengthens

Japan, once viewed as a high‑price luxury destination, is now considered affordable for independent travelers. The yen’s depreciation—from about 110 yen per euro in 2012 to roughly 170 yen now—has improved the value of foreign currency, reducing overall travel costs despite long‑haul flight expenses.

The Japan National Tourism Organization reported a record 42 million international arrivals in 2025, a 15.8 % rise over the previous year. Experts advise visiting in February for the lowest accommodation prices, while autumn offers pleasant weather and spring draws crowds for cherry‑blossom festivals. Transportation savings are available through regional rail passes such as the JR East Pass, night and long‑distance buses, and, where necessary, rental cars (Japan drives on the left). English signage is common in major stations, though language can still be a barrier outside urban areas.

Travel agencies and tourism boards recommend flexible itineraries, including stopovers in Singapore, China or Taiwan to cut flight costs, and highlight attractions like Osaka Castle and the Shinkansen network for efficient, though not cheap, travel across the country.
