Japan, UK and Italy extend GCAP fighter development contract to 2027

The United Kingdom, Japan and Italy have signed a new contract worth 4.6 billion pounds to extend the development phase of their joint next‑generation stealth fighter program, GCAP, until the end of 2027. The agreement, awarded to the Edgewing joint venture that includes BAE Systems, Leonardo and Japan Aerospace Industry Promotion, covers an 18‑month design and development period and follows a previous contract that ended in June.

The contract aims to complete the advanced concept‑evaluation stage, define key aircraft requirements and conduct intensive testing, with the goal of having the aircraft enter service by 2035. The extension comes after concerns about British defence spending and confirms continued financial commitment from all three governments under the GCAP International Government Organisation (GIGO).
