Japan, UK and Italy showcase GCAP next‑gen fighter mock‑up at Farnborough

A full‑scale mock‑up of the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) next‑generation fighter was displayed at the Farnborough International Airshow. The aircraft, being co‑developed by Japan, the United Kingdom and Italy, featured a cockpit with a large display, prototype landing gear and control stick layouts. Design work is carried out by the Edgewing joint venture, a partnership of BAE Systems, Leonardo and Japan Aviation Industry Promotion, with further contributions from major engine and avionics partners. The program targets entry into service around 2035 as a successor to the Eurofighter.

Canada was announced as the first observer nation in GCAP. While the observer role does not yet confer industrial work, Canadian defence‑industry executives, such as CAE President Pascal Grenier, said the status could open opportunities for Canadian aerospace firms to participate in future phases of the programme and support domestic job creation and export growth.
