Japan unveils 34 trillion‑yen content industry boost and backs AI game platform

The Japanese government is preparing a new central agency to coordinate support for the game, animation, manga and related content sectors. Under the plan, a total of 34 trillion yen (about US$220 billion) will be invested by 2033, with 24.5 trillion yen earmarked for video games, 3.3 trillion for animation, 3 trillion for music, 1.6 trillion for comics and 1.3 trillion for live‑action productions. The goal is to raise overseas sales of Japanese content to 20 trillion yen and generate an estimated 326 trillion‑yen economic ripple effect. The agency, modelled on South Korea’s KOCCA, is slated to launch in fiscal year 2027.

As part of the same “IP360 – Toward 20 Trillion Yen” growth‑investment program, game developer Bufff was selected to develop an AI‑driven casual‑game creation platform called JAMMM. The platform will integrate AI tools for game production, content safety, and analytics, and is aimed at enabling rapid, low‑cost development of games that can be exported to overseas markets. Bufff plans to have JAMMM operational by the end of February 2027.
