Japan and U.S. launch Keen Sword 27 military exercises
Japan and the United States have launched Keen Sword 27, a massive biennial joint military exercise involving approximately 57,000 personnel. The drills, which run through October 29, focus on defending Japan’s southwestern islands and maritime territories amid rising regional tensions.
The Japanese Self-Defense Forces are contributing 45,000 personnel, 6,100 vehicles, 40 ships, and 260 aircraft, while the United States is providing roughly 12,000 service members. A key feature of this year's exercise is the first deployment of Japan’s long-range Type 25 anti-ship missile outside of its Kumamoto base. Additionally, the U.S. is deploying the NMESIS anti-ship system and the MADIS short-range air defense system to Yonaguni Island, located near Taiwan.
The exercise includes participation from seven other nations, with France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the Philippines joining for the first time. Training scenarios encompass amphibious landings, air and missile defense, and logistics coordination. In Oita Prefecture, approximately 50 citizens gathered to protest the exercises, calling for their cancellation and requesting that nighttime curfews applied in Okinawa be extended to their region.
