Nintendo leads physical game market amid global sales shifts
The global video game market is experiencing significant shifts in hardware and software consumption. In the United States, spending on physical game software has fallen to its lowest level since tracking began in 1995. Despite this decline, Nintendo maintains a dominant 63% market share of physical game spending, driven by the Switch and Switch 2 platforms. However, overall U.S. console hardware sales saw a 39% decline in July, influenced by rising system prices due to increased component and RAM costs.
In Japan, recent sales data from Famitsu for the period of August 3 to 16, 2026, shows Nintendo Switch 2 leading in hardware unit sales. On the software side, ‘Rhythm Heaven Groove’ emerged as the top seller, followed by ‘Splatoon Raiders’ and ‘Beast of Reincarnation’. Notably, the physical launch of ‘Marvel Tokon’ on PS5 saw underwhelming results in the Japanese market, with reports indicating it sold fewer than 3,000 physical copies during its debut week.
