Japan-Vietnam friendship rooted in historical news photography

Historical photographs provided by the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) played a crucial role in fostering solidarity between the Japanese and Vietnamese people, particularly during the mid-20th century. Members of the Japan-Vietnam Friendship Association in Tokyo recall how these images served as a bridge for grassroots diplomacy long before formal diplomatic ties were established in 1973.

Following the 1954 Geneva Accords, Japanese soldiers who had fought alongside the Viet Minh sought to maintain connections with Vietnam, helping to form the foundation of the friendship association in 1955. By 1965, the association had established systematic links with various Vietnamese organizations, including the VNA.

During the Vietnam War, VNA photographs were distributed through various channels, including news agencies and direct imports, to create posters and exhibitions in Japan. These visual materials were instrumental in mobilizing Japanese students, workers, and unions to support the Vietnamese independence movement through fundraising and humanitarian aid.
