Japan warns of dual‑front threat as Russia steps up Far‑East military activity

During a visit to military bases in Hokkaido, Japan’s Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said Russia’s growing military presence in its Far East poses a serious security concern. He highlighted rapid north‑south troop deployment exercises and warned that Russia could launch a diversionary operation around Hokkaido, creating a potential second front while Japan remains focused on tensions with China in the south. Koizumi called for “impeccable” defences on the northern frontier and stressed the need to maintain a strong defence system on the island. Analysts noted that Russia’s posture, coupled with its strategic cooperation with China, adds to the overall threat perception for Japan.
