Japan waste heat power market to grow via industrial decarbonization

Japan's waste heat power generation market is entering a new growth phase driven by industrial decarbonization and energy efficiency initiatives. Energy-intensive manufacturing sectors, including steel, chemical, cement, petroleum refining, glass, and pulp and paper, are increasingly looking to convert unused process heat into electricity to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions.

According to market research, the sector is projected to experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.7% between 2025 and 2035. A key driver is the expansion of Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology, which is particularly effective for converting medium-temperature heat (approximately 80°C to 350°C) into power, offering economic viability where traditional steam-based systems may fail.

The Japanese government's Green Transformation (GX) strategy is further accelerating this trend by investing in industrial decarbonization and the redevelopment of industrial clusters. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has identified specific GX strategy regions, such as industrial complexes and areas centered on decarbonized power sources, creating opportunities for large-scale integrated energy projects involving heat recovery, on-site power generation, and energy storage.
