Japan weather: Heatwaves, drought, and heavy rain alerts
Japan is experiencing diverse extreme weather conditions across several regions. In Kumamoto Prefecture, a weather advisory has been issued regarding high temperatures and low rainfall. The region has faced intense heat and record-low precipitation since July, with average temperatures in Kumamoto City being 1.9°C higher than normal. Forecasters expect high temperatures and low rainfall to persist for approximately one month.
In western Toyama Prefecture, the Shogawa River is facing potential drought conditions. Water levels at the Mobunai Dam in Gifu Prefecture have dropped significantly, leading to a 20% reduction in water intake for agricultural use. Rice farmers have expressed concern that continued water shortages could impact crop yields during this critical growth period.
Meanwhile, other regions are dealing with heavy rain and instability. Tochigi Prefecture has been placed on alert for flooding, landslides, lightning, and sudden gusts due to unstable atmospheric conditions. In Oita Prefecture, evacuation orders for Hita City related to previous heavy rains have been lifted as the danger has subsided.
