Japan wholesale inflation rises 7.2% in July

Japan’s wholesale inflation remained elevated in July, with producer prices rising 7.2% compared to the previous year. This increase is slightly lower than the 7.4% economists had anticipated but remains higher than the 7.3% gain recorded in June.

The inflationary pressure appears to be broadening beyond energy and food. Key drivers include rising costs for nonferrous metals, which jumped 40.6% year-on-year, and demand linked to the artificial intelligence investment boom, which is driving up prices for industrial materials used in data centers and semiconductors.

These figures reinforce market expectations that the Bank of Japan may consider raising interest rates as early as September. Analysts note that renewed tensions in the Middle East could further exacerbate these pressures by driving up crude oil prices and subsequent energy costs.
