Japan workplace trends: Resignation agencies and management responses

Recent reports highlight evolving challenges in employee retention and management in Japan, specifically regarding the rise of resignation agencies and effective communication during turnover.

In the logistics sector, one transport company executive reported the sudden loss of a trusted employee of over ten years. The individual, a mid-30s staff member responsible for dispatch operations, resigned abruptly through a professional resignation agency, leaving management blindsided by the lack of direct communication.

To address such sudden departures, management expert Junya Honda suggests that supervisors should avoid immediately questioning reasons or attempting to retain staff. Instead, the recommended first response is to ask, ‘Since when have you been thinking about this?’ This approach helps leaders determine if the decision is a long-standing conviction or a recent emotional reaction, allowing for a more appropriate subsequent dialogue.
