Japan youth shift toward mobile careers and generative AI use
A survey conducted by Persol Career Co., Ltd. via its service doda reveals a significant shift in career perspectives among Japanese youth. Data shows that the traditional model of staying with a single company until retirement is fading; over 84% of university students and 93% of young professionals do not assume they will remain at their first company until retirement.
Young professionals increasingly view their first jobs as stepping stones, with many planning to move on within three to five years to acquire specific skills. This shift reflects a more rational approach to career development focused on long-term options rather than lifelong loyalty.
The study also highlights the growing role of generative AI in both job hunting and professional work. Over 70% of both university students and young professionals believe AI skills are important. While students use AI primarily as an output aid for tasks like writing and summarizing during job searches, young professionals use it to improve efficiency in information retrieval and research. Despite its benefits, concerns remain regarding security risks, accuracy, and the potential loss of human-centric skills such as judgment and responsibility.
