Japan youth suicide rates reach record high

Japan is facing a critical rise in youth suicides, with statistics from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and the National Police Agency showing that 538 elementary, junior high, and high school students took their lives in 2025, marking a record high since 1980.

Data indicates a significant trend where suicides among those aged 18 and under peak around September 1st, coinciding with the end of summer vacations and the start of the new school term. Experts, including Associate Professor Takashi Okura of Okayama Prefectural University, emphasize the necessity of cooperation between families and schools.
