Japanese action film 'Shijūku‑SEEK' wins 82 awards with festival‑first model
The Japanese action film "Shijūku‑SEEK" (四十九‑SEEK), starring Asano Kansuke and directed by Shein Kosugi, was produced using a novel "festival‑first" financing system. Instead of aiming for an immediate domestic theatrical release, the team entered the film directly into international festivals, where Kosugi negotiated distribution deals and sold streaming rights to recoup the investment before any Japanese release.
The film, which relies on real‑body stunts rather than CGI, has been selected for 42 festivals in 17 countries and has won a total of 82 awards across 12 nations. Asano, a martial‑arts champion and longtime Jackie Chan fan, also served as producer, while Kosugi, son of famed ninja‑film star Sho Kosugi, handled directing, editing and overseas negotiations. A sequel is already planned, promising a larger scale and a more animated visual style.
The success of "Shijūku‑SEEK" highlights a new pathway for independent Japanese cinema to reach global audiences and secure financing through festival exposure.
