Japanese airports test AI system for infrastructure maintenance

Nineteen airports in Japan, including Narita International Airport near Tokyo and facilities in the Kinki region, have begun testing an artificial intelligence system designed to monitor and maintain infrastructure. Developed by Sumitomo Corporation, the AI system analyzes data from cameras mounted on inspection vehicles and drones to detect runway cracks and other irregularities.

The initiative aims to improve infrastructure management efficiency in response to widespread labor shortages. Sumitomo reports that the AI-driven inspection method has the potential to reduce inspection times by half. The airports plan to implement the system fully following the conclusion of the testing phase, which is scheduled to run through March of next year.
