Japanese and French craftsmanship to be featured in 2026 exhibitions

Japanese and French craftsmanship will be highlighted through two major upcoming exhibitions in 2026.

Gurunavi, Inc. will debut the “JAPAN WOOD x CRAFTSMANSHIP” pavilion at MAISON & OBJET PARIS 2026 from September 10 to 14. Supported by the Forestry Agency of Japan, the pavilion will showcase over 40 wood products, including furniture and tableware, that blend traditional techniques with modern design. A featured demonstration will include “Odate Magewappa,” an ancient craft from Akita Prefecture, performed by certified craftsman Yoshimasa Shibata. The exhibit aims to promote sustainable forest management and eco-friendly living.

Additionally, the “KOGEism 2026 — Material and Human Thought Exhibition” will open at AXIS Gallery in Roppongi on September 16, 2026. Produced by 4D Co., Ltd., the exhibition will feature 20 artisans—15 from Japan and 5 from France—working across various media such as lacquer, ceramics, metalwork, and glass. The event seeks to redefine craftsmanship not merely as tradition, but as a contemporary expression of thought and relationship with materials. The exhibition space will incorporate 100-year-old reclaimed wood to bridge historical materials with modern artistic expression.
