Japanese archaeological sites announce special autumn exhibitions

Several archaeological sites in Japan have announced special autumn openings and exhibitions focusing on Kofun-period burial mounds.

In Miyazaki Prefecture, the Saitobaru Archaeological Museum is hosting a special exhibition titled ‘Hyuga no Zansho – Japan Heritage: Kofun Landscape of Nankoku Miyazaki’. The exhibit explores the social conditions and diplomatic relations of the Kofun period, specifically examining the connection between local burial mounds and the Yamato administration. This coincides with the ‘Japan Heritage Festival in Nankoku Miyazaki’ held in early November.

In Kyoto, the Oeda-yama Kofun cluster (Katsurazaka Kofun Forest), a designated historical site, will hold a special public viewing on November 22. The event includes the opening of three stone chambers from the 23 circular mounds dating to the late 6th and early 7th centuries, guided explanations by local preservation society members, and activities such as magatama bead making.
