Japanese automotive market trends: Mazda luxury SUVs and used Toyota Vellfire
The Japanese automotive market is seeing a shift in value propositions between new kei cars and used luxury models. Mazda has introduced a high-specification version of its Flair Crossover, a light SUV. The top-tier ZT 4WD model is priced at 2,275,900 yen, approximately 660,000 yen more than the entry-level XG model. This flagship trim includes premium features such as a 660cc turbo engine with mild hybrid technology, a 9-inch HD navigation system, 360-degree camera, and advanced safety suites including lane keep assist and blind spot monitoring.
Simultaneously, rising prices for new kei cars—with popular models like the Honda N-BOX approaching or exceeding 2 million to 3 million yen—are driving interest toward the used luxury market. Consumers can now find previous-generation Toyota Vellfire minivans starting at approximately 1.5 million yen. While these budget-friendly options typically involve high mileage (over 100,000 km) or gasoline engines, they offer a premium alternative to the increasingly expensive new compact vehicle segment.
