Japanese banks expand sustainability-linked loans to support decarbonization

Financial institutions in Japan are expanding the use of sustainability-linked loans to support corporate decarbonization efforts.

Iida Shinkin Bank has implemented a system to support decarbonization management by offering preferential interest rates based on specific evaluation criteria. This initiative utilizes the ‘Shinshu Sustainability Link Loan (Decarbonization Type)’ framework established by the prefecture to encourage sustainable business practices.

Similarly, Chugoku Bank has executed a sustainability-linked loan for Yamato Juken Co., Ltd. The loan is tied to the company’s ability to meet specific targets regarding its Net Zero Energy House (ZEH) contract rate. Under this arrangement, interest rates will decrease if the company achieves its environmental and social goals, providing financial motivation for CO2 emission reductions and sustainable management.
