Japanese banks see average employee salary rise to ¥6.84 million
A survey of 98 domestic banks shows the average annual salary for 2025 reached 6.84 million yen, a 4.6 % increase of 30,700 yen from the previous year. The rise reflects higher interest rates that boosted profitability and intensified competition for staff.
Mitsui Sumitomo Bank topped the list with a salary of 9.338 million yen, the first time a Japanese bank has exceeded 9 million yen since 2021. Aozora Bank placed second at 9.277 million yen and Mitsubishi UFJ Bank third at 9.143 million yen. Large‑city banks averaged 8.544 million yen, regional banks 6.989 million yen and second‑tier regional banks 6.135 million yen, underscoring persistent wage gaps across bank types. Seventeen banks posted salary growth above 5 %, with Fukui Bank recording the highest increase at 10.6 %.
Overall, 59 of the 63 banks with comparable data reported higher salaries, and the average age of bank staff fell slightly to 40.1 years, indicating a modest rejuvenation of the workforce.
