Japanese baseball players increasingly choose MLB over NPB

A growing number of Japanese baseball prospects are bypassing the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) draft to pursue careers directly in the United States. This shift reflects a changing landscape in professional baseball, where the path to the Major Leagues (MLB) is becoming a more mainstream option for elite talent.

High school pitcher Shoki Oda of Yokohama High School has announced his decision to challenge himself in the U.S. to achieve his goal of becoming a world-class pitcher. Similarly, Keio University pitcher Hironari Hiroike has decided to seek growth in the American system, citing the superior developmental environments and scientific training methods available in the U.S. after being scouted by multiple MLB teams.

Junichi Tazawa, a pitcher and GM for Saitama Musashi Heat Bears, noted that the era of restrictive rules, such as the former ‘Tazawa Rule’ which penalized players for seeking overseas contracts, has passed. With the rule's abolition in 2020, players now face more freedom to choose their career paths. Tazawa observed that the increasing number of Japanese players competing in the MLB is contributing to a globalized standard of play, similar to the impact seen in professional soccer.
