Japanese beetle detected at Hannover Airport, first record in Niedersachsen

Germany’s plant protection service confirmed the first finding of the invasive Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica) in Lower Saxony after two specimens were caught in baited traps at Hannover Airport. Authorities believe the insects arrived as "blind passengers" on aircraft or trucks and are intensifying monitoring around the airport.

The beetle, native to East Asia, is listed as a Union quarantine pest because its larvae damage the roots of grasses while adults feed on leaves, flowers and fruit of more than 400 plant species, including maize, soy, grapes, fruit trees and ornamental plants. If it becomes established, it could threaten fruit orchards, vineyards, forestry, agriculture and public green spaces across Germany.
