Japanese beetle detection near Hungarian border triggers Nébih response
The National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) has initiated emergency phytosanitary measures following the detection of the invasive Japanese beetle near the Hungarian border. Slovenian authorities reported finding a female specimen in the town of Pince, approximately 500 meters from Hungary, in July.
To monitor and prevent the spread, Nébih has deployed six pheromone traps in Zala County along major transit routes, including the M7, M70, and Route 86. The beetle is considered a high-risk pest because the adults feed on a wide variety of plants, such as grapes, fruit trees, and roses, while the larvae damage plant roots in the soil. In some cases, group feeding can lead to total defoliation.
The detection follows a similar sighting in July near Graz, Austria, where two male beetles were found. Authorities warn that the pest can be transported long distances by humans via vehicles, luggage, or camping equipment. Nébih has urged the public to inspect belongings when returning from abroad and to report any suspicious sightings to local government offices or the agency immediately.
