Japanese beetle specimens captured in Liechtenstein and Swiss canton

After a dead Japanese beetle was discovered near the A13 highway in the Canton of St. Gallen about a month ago, authorities set up additional traps within a three‑kilometre radius of the find. Nine live beetles have since been caught in traps placed in both the Principality of Liechtenstein and the Swiss canton.

Experts from St. Gallen and Liechtenstein are coordinating with the Swiss federal government to determine the extent of the infestation and to plan possible control actions. The invasive Japanese beetle can cause severe damage to plants, trees, vineyards, lawns and other cultivated areas, but at present no specific guidance has been issued for residents, farmers or gardeners.
