Japan's critical infrastructure faces cyber threats amid Taiwan tensions
Rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait pose a significant cybersecurity threat to Japan's critical infrastructure, including the banking and energy sectors. Experts warn that Japan could become a target of hybrid warfare, which combines military action with information warfare and cyberattacks.
Recent cyberattacks on Taiwanese government agencies utilized frontier AI models to deploy multiple AI agents simultaneously, successfully breaching numerous accounts and stealing sensitive personnel information. This evolution in technology allows attackers to identify system vulnerabilities more efficiently. Takahiro Sasaki, a former Rear Admiral and researcher at the Fujitsu Defense & National Security Research Institute, notes that while China has conducted DDoS attacks against Japanese government websites since the 2010s, there is a growing shift toward information theft targeting the defense industry and essential services.
