Japanese children's books focus on food education and nutrition
New literary works focusing on food education and the joy of eating are being released for children in Japan.
On November 5, Kodansha will release ‘Demo Sonna Koto wa Okamainashi ni Agetate no Korokke wo Taberu.’ by the award-winning illustrator duo Harapeko Megane. The picture book, which follows a theme of ‘eating as a way of life,’ uses a blend of realistic culinary observation and fantasy to engage young readers. The duo previously won the 74th Shogakukan Children's Publication Culture Award for ‘Yama no Full Course.’
Other educational resources include ‘Bokura ga Ryori wo Suru Riyu’ by Sho Matsumaru, published by Kumon Publishing. This manga-style book teaches elementary students the basics of nutrition and cooking skills. Additionally, the short story collection ‘Kyushoku no Obachan Taberu no wa Nigate’ by Eiko Yamaguchi explores food education through the lens of school lunch programs across various Japanese regions.
