Japanese cities allocate funds for station repairs and autonomous driving

Hitachi City has announced a supplementary budget proposal that includes 1.14 billion yen over four years for the repair and functional consolidation of the JR Hitachi Station escalator road. The project, involving a cost-sharing agreement with JR, is expected to begin moving damaged structures in fiscal 2027. Additionally, the city has allocated approximately 134 million yen for a new transportation project aimed at verifying autonomous driving through data analysis and testing around Omika Station.

In Takaoka City, officials are planning to renovate Amaharashi Station on the JR Himi Line to accommodate a surge in domestic and international tourists. The station, originally built in 1912, faces aging infrastructure and a lack of facilities such as luggage storage and adequate restrooms. Following a significant increase in visitors to the Amaharashi coast, the city has budgeted 2 million yen to formulate basic renovation policies, with detailed designs expected in subsequent years.
