Japanese companies advance large-scale CCS cluster projects

Japanese companies are advancing large-scale Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects through commissioned studies by the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC).

A consortium of six companies, including Sumitomo Corporation, ENEOS Holdings, JFE Holdings, Asahi Kasei, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, and Mitsubishi Chemical Group, has been selected to study the Mizushima cluster in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture. This project aims to reduce costs by sharing facilities for the separation, recovery, liquefaction, and storage of CO2. The Mizushima cluster is expected to ship approximately 3.43 million tons of liquefied CO2 annually, making it the largest scale among the six clusters selected by JOGMEC.

Separately, Cosmo Oil and Kansai Electric Power have been commissioned to conduct design work for a CCS project in the Sakai-Senboku area of Osaka Prefecture. This initiative focuses on the shared use of equipment to handle CO2 from the Kansai Electric Power Sakai Port Power Station and the Cosmo Oil Sakai Refinery. The project anticipates an annual CO2 shipment of approximately 750,000 tons and aims to build a regional value chain by potentially collaborating with other local emitters.
