Japanese consortium develops floating data center concept
A Japanese consortium consisting of NYK Line, NTT Facilities, Eurus Energy Holdings, and MUFG Bank is developing a concept for floating data centers located within port areas. The initiative aims to address the global shortage of land, power supply constraints, and long construction timelines associated with traditional data center expansion.
Unlike models designed for the open sea, this concept involves mooring floating platforms alongside port quays. This approach allows the facilities to utilize existing metropolitan infrastructure, telecommunications networks, and local energy resources. The group has already signed a memorandum of understanding with the city of Yokohama for a renewable-powered demonstration, with testing having commenced in March.
While the consortium is focusing on port-side deployment to ease logistical hurdles such as maintenance access and connectivity, they are also considering future offshore deployments that could leverage renewable energy sources like offshore wind.
