Tokyo livestreamer stabbed to death; suspect admits guilt in court
In March 2025, 22‑year‑old livestreamer Airi Sato was attacked and fatally stabbed on a Tokyo street in Takadanobaba while broadcasting a live video. The 44‑year‑old suspect, Kenichi Takano, was arrested at the scene and later appeared in Tokyo District Court, where he acknowledged the charges and apologized, stating “間違いありません。申し訳ありませんでした。” (I am certain. I am sorry).
Investigators said the motive stemmed from a monetary dispute: Takano had borrowed large sums from Sato and, after a civil lawsuit for repayment, allegedly planned revenge. The trial’s initial hearing took place on 1 July, with the verdict scheduled for 15 July. The case highlights concerns over online harassment and safety for content creators.
