Japanese courts issue sentences for fatal assault and attempted murder
The Sapporo District Court has sentenced Yuto Kawaguchi to life imprisonment for his role in a fatal group assault. The incident occurred in Ebetsu, Hokkaido, in October 2024, when a 20-year-old male university student was beaten by a group of six individuals. Kawaguchi, who was 18 at the time of the crime, was identified as the primary perpetrator.
In a separate case, the Tokyo District Court sentenced Shion Miyanishi, 32, to nine years in prison for the attempted murder of Takashi Tachibana, leader of the ‘NHK Party’. The attack took place on a street in Kasumigaseki, Tokyo, last March, when Miyanishi struck Tachibana in the head with a hatchet. Miyanishi stated his motive was resentment over Tachibana’s alleged role in the suicide of a former Hyogo prefectural assembly member due to defamation. While the prosecution sought a 12-year sentence, the defense argued for five years, noting the defendant’s regret.
