Japanese courts rule on drunk driving conviction and fatal boat accident appeal

A 36-year-old man, Shinjiro Asakawa, has been handed a guilty verdict with a three-year suspended sentence by the Kagoshima District Court. The ruling follows a July 2024 incident in Aira City, where Asakawa drove at 125 km/h while intoxicated, striking a vehicle waiting at a red light and causing serious injuries to a married couple.

In a separate legal matter, the Supreme Court of Japan has scheduled a ruling for October 16 regarding a 2020 boat accident at Lake Inawashiro in Fukushima Prefecture. Tsuyoshi Sato, a former company executive, is accused of professional negligence resulting in death and injury after a boat strike killed an 8-year-old boy. While a lower court initially issued a prison sentence, an appeals court acquitted him, prompting a prosecution appeal to the Supreme Court.
