Japanese cultural exhibitions to feature Daitoku-ji and Kudai-ji treasures
Several upcoming cultural exhibitions in Japan will highlight significant historical and religious artifacts.
The Tokyo National Museum will host a special exhibition titled ‘700th Anniversary Commemorative Special Exhibition: Daitoku-ji Honcho Muso no Zen-en’ starting October 14, 2026. The event will feature national treasures and important cultural properties from the Rinzai Zen temple Daitoku-ji, including a statue of the tea master Sen no Rikyu. The exhibition explores the historical connections between Daitoku-ji, the tea master, and the Toyotomi brothers.
Additionally, the MIHO MUSEUM in Shiga Prefecture will hold an autumn special exhibition titled ‘Kudai-ji and Buddhist Art of Omi’ from September 26 to December 6, 2026. A major highlight is the first public viewing outside of the temple of the ‘Wooden Eleven-faced Kannon Standing Statue,’ a precious Buddhist icon dating back to the late 8th century. The exhibition will include 93 items, tracing the history of Kudai-ji temple through ancient metalwork and historical documents.
