Japanese Danshari and KonMari methods promote mental clarity
Japanese organizational philosophies, specifically Danshari and the KonMari method, are being utilized to connect physical decluttering with mental clarity. These approaches aim to reduce the cognitive load caused by excessive possessions.
Danshari, a philosophy presented by Hideko Yamashita, incorporates elements of Zen Buddhism and Yoga. It consists of three principles: the conscious refusal of unnecessary items, the act of discarding existing excess, and the mental detachment from material possessions. Interior designer Yoko Oda describes Danshari as a continuous daily habit rather than a seasonal cleaning event.
The KonMari method, popularized by Marie Kondo, focuses on emotional resonance. This approach requires individuals to assess whether each object sparks joy. Kondo’s work also incorporates the concept of 'Mottainai,' which emphasizes respect for resources and gratitude when parting with items that no longer serve a purpose.
