Japanese delegation visits Beijing to improve ties with China

A delegation of Japanese politicians has traveled to Beijing in an apparent attempt to improve relations with China. The visit follows one of the most significant diplomatic rifts between the two nations since the 1970s.

Tensions escalated after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could constitute a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan, potentially justifying the use of force. This prompted a sharp response from Beijing, including aggressive rhetoric from China’s consul general in Osaka and subsequent trade restrictions. China has recently tightened controls on the export of dual-use goods and rare earth materials essential for high-tech manufacturing, including smartphones and fighter jets.

The visiting delegation includes Gaku Hashimoto of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), alongside lawmakers from the opposition Komeito and the Centrist Reform Alliance parties.
