Japanese distance runners prepare for Asian Games

Leading Japanese long-distance runners Nozomi Tanaka and Yuma Yamamoto are preparing for the upcoming Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.

Tanaka, a prominent figure in middle-distance running holding Japanese records in the 1500m, 3000m, and 5000m, shared her recent psychological struggles. She revealed that she had previously considered stepping away from racing due to a loss of competitive drive and a sense of detachment from the pressure of winning. Supported by her coach and father, Tanaka has worked to regain her motivation through focused training, including high-altitude sessions in Italy, and aims to compete in three events: the 1500m, 5000m, and 10000m.

Yamamoto, a Paris Olympics representative, enters the games following a strong performance at the Japanese Championships, where she achieved her first 14-minute mark in the 5000m. Yamamoto expressed her goal of securing a medal and repeating her sub-15-minute performance. Beyond athletics, she noted her influence on social media, where she uses her platform to challenge traditional restrictive norms in the sport, such as rules regarding hair and personal style, by demonstrating that athletes can maintain their individuality while competing at the highest level.
