Japanese e-book services Renta! and Comic Seymour hit by unauthorized access

Multiple Japanese digital manga and e-book services have experienced unauthorized access, leading to service suspensions and data leaks.

Papylus, the operator of the rental service ‘Renta!’, announced on October 19 that the service was suspended due to the possibility of external unauthorized access. The company is currently investigating the details and the extent of the impact, stating that a timeline for service resumption remains undecided. They are also considering how to handle rental works that could not be accessed during the maintenance period.

Separately, NTT Solmare reported that its e-book store, ‘Comic Seymour’, suffered a breach of its member information management system. The company confirmed that data including email addresses, hashed passwords, dates of birth, gender, and nicknames were leaked to a third party. Investigations revealed that some system log files were also accessed. NTT Solmare has implemented measures to prevent further damage and is working with relevant authorities to restore services once security is ensured.
