Japanese education firms launch AI tools for English grading

Educational institutions in Japan are introducing new AI-driven tools to enhance English language learning and streamline teacher workloads.

ECC has announced the upcoming release of ‘ECC AI Drill’ in April 2027. This system is designed to recognize handwritten English answers on paper, allowing for the simultaneous grading and evaluation of various question formats, including multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, and free composition. The service aims to bridge the gap between digital typing and the handwritten requirements of actual entrance exams while providing immediate feedback.

Additionally, Mitsumura Tosho Publishing Co., Ltd. has added a new feature to its ‘TOC-ME! assistant’ app, which is tailored for elementary, junior high, and high school students. The update allows the AI to automatically grade students' audio files, analyzing pronunciation and grammar for reading aloud and speaking tasks. The system generates personalized advice for each student, helping teachers manage large classes more efficiently while maintaining high-quality instruction.
