Japanese Emperor Naruhito's state visit to Belgium highlights Princess Elisabeth's debut

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan arrived in Belgium for a three‑day state visit, marking the 160th anniversary of Japan‑Belgium friendship. They were received by King Philippe and Queen Mathilde at Brussels’ Royal Palace and later attended a state banquet at the Castle of Laeken.

During the banquet, Belgian Crown Princess Elisabeth appeared for the first time at such an event, joining her parents, siblings Gabriel, Emmanuel and Eléonore, and other royal relatives. She wore a diadem formerly worn by her mother, Queen Mathilde, who also wore the historic “Diadem of the Nine Provinces.” Emperor Naruhito’s speech recalled four generations of ties between the two monarchies and expressed gratitude for the ongoing bilateral relationship.

The visit also included a welcoming ceremony at Brussels airport where Princess Elisabeth greeted the imperial couple, and a photo session with the royal families at Ciergnon Castle. The Emperor’s remarks and the royal participation underscored the deepening diplomatic and cultural connections between Japan and Belgium.
