Japanese firms achieve milestones in ammonia and hydrogen marine fuel technology

Japanese companies have achieved two major milestones in the development of zero-carbon marine fuels. On September 17, NYK Line, in collaboration with Japan Marine United Corporation, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, and others, completed the world’s first ship-to-ship ammonia bunkering operation to an ammonia-fueled vessel. The operation, conducted at the Ariake Shipyard, involved transferring ammonia from the carrier Shoei Maru to an ammonia-fueled medium gas carrier scheduled for delivery in November 2026.

In a separate advancement, Japan Engine Corporation, alongside Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Yanmar Power Solutions, has completed a hydrogen-fueled engine for large commercial vessels. Factory testing of the 6UEC35LSGH engine demonstrated a hydrogen co-firing rate of at least 95%, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 95% compared to conventional heavy-fuel-oil engines. The engine utilizes a high-pressure direct injection system and safety features such as double-walled piping to prevent leakage. The technology is slated for installation on a 17,500 DWT multipurpose vessel for Mitsui O. S. K. Lines in January 2027.
