Japanese firms advance quantum computing and humanoid AI research
Japanese companies Mitsubishi Electric and Highlanders have been selected for research and development projects funded by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to advance next-generation computing and robotics.
Mitsubishi Electric will focus on scaling quantum computers. Through two NEDO-backed projects, the company aims to develop high-stability laser systems for neutral atom and ion trap quantum computers, as well as ultra-small, low-noise amplifier modules for superconducting quantum computers. The goal is to contribute to the realization of 1-million-qubit class quantum computers by the 2030s.
Highlanders is developing a physical AI foundation model designed for humanoid robots. The company plans to use its domestic humanoid, 'N', to perform alignment tasks in automotive manufacturing. By integrating visual, tactile, and force sensors, the project aims to create models capable of predicting physical states like contact force and slippage. Highlanders is also working with Mitsubishi Motors to mass-produce its humanoid hardware to ensure a steady supply of high-quality training data.
