Toyota unveils upgraded GR86 with Solid Gray paint and refined dynamics
On 6 August 2026 Toyota announced a partially upgraded GR86 model for the Japanese market. The new version reintroduces the limited‑edition “Solid Gray” exterior colour that was briefly offered on the original 86, and adds a range of performance and comfort refinements.
Key technical updates include a re‑tuned throttle response for smoother acceleration on low‑friction surfaces, revised electric power‑steering control to reduce wobble in high‑speed corners, and a broader shift‑interlock chamfer for easier down‑shifts from fifth to fourth gear. The EyeSight driver‑assist system is upgraded from a two‑camera to a three‑camera configuration, expanding its field of view. Interior changes on the RZ trim feature cast‑iron‑black‑finished switches, a black‑and‑red colour scheme, and overall higher‑quality cockpit materials.
A new automatic‑transmission (AT) option is added to the GR86 Cup Car Basic race‑prep model, expanding its appeal to amateur racers. Pricing in Japan starts at ¥2 936 000 (≈ €16 000) for the base manual version and reaches ¥3 616 000 (≈ €20 000) for the top‑spec RZ with automatic. Customer orders begin on 28 August, with production slated to start in December 2026. The model will not be sold in Europe due to current emissions regulations.
