Japanese game developers adopt generative AI at record rates

A significant majority of Japanese video game developers are now utilizing generative artificial intelligence in their workflows. According to a preview of the 2026 Game Industry Report released by the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) at the Tokyo Game Show, 85.8% of surveyed professionals reported using generative AI tools.

The adoption rate has seen a sharp increase from 51% in 2025. Among those using the technology, 63% report using it on a daily basis, while 22.8% use it occasionally. The survey included 1,349 valid responses from industry professionals at companies such as Capcom, Sega, Konami, and Level-5.

Industry professionals and companies primarily cite improvements in operational efficiency and productivity as the main benefits. Other expected advantages include reduced development times and lower production costs. The data suggests the industry has moved past the initial stage of experimentation and is now integrating AI as a standard tool for tasks such as coding, text generation, and asset creation.
