Japanese gaming and entertainment firms report mixed quarterly earnings
Major Japanese entertainment and gaming companies have reported diverse financial results for the recent quarter. Square Enix Holdings saw a significant surge in its HD game segment, with operating income increasing sixfold, driven by titles such as ‘FF7R’. Sanrio also reported record first-quarter revenue and operating profit, supported by global licensing growth. Capcom reported an 87% increase in operating profit for its game business, bolstered by the success of ‘Pragmata’ and ‘Resident Evil’ titles.
In contrast, KADOKAWA reported a decline in operating profit for its anime and live-action video business due to rising production costs, despite revenue growth from major IPs. Nexon reported strong results with a 12% increase in operating profit, leading to a decision to issue a massive $2 billion special dividend. Other notable movements include Bushiroad achieving record sales and KLab returning to operating profit for the first time in 19 quarters, aided by the performance of ‘DQ Smaguro’. Meanwhile, Odd Number and its affiliates have entered bankruptcy proceedings with debts totaling approximately 10.3 billion yen.
