Japanese gaming industry stability highlighted amid Western layoffs

Discussions on Reddit have highlighted the perceived stability of the Japanese video game industry compared to Western counterparts. Industry expert Amir Satvat, a business development director at Tencent Games North America, noted that Japanese companies like Nintendo, Capcom, and Konami maintain high employee retention rates, often exceeding 97 percent.

Key factors cited for this stability include smaller, leaner development teams and a lack of massive, 500-person blockbuster projects that often lead to volatility. Additionally, executive compensation in Japan is significantly lower than in the West; for example, Nintendo's CEO reportedly earned approximately $2 million, whereas the CEO of EA received over $38 million.

However, the discussion also raised criticisms regarding Japanese work culture. Some observers pointed to the potential for long working hours and high levels of responsibility as reasons for maintaining small teams, while others noted that strict labor laws making layoffs difficult can lead to issues like low talent mobility or unproductive work environments for permanent employees.
