Shoki Oda announces plan to pursue MLB career over NPB
Shoki Oda, a highly touted 18-year-old pitcher from Yokohama High School, has announced his decision to pursue a career in Major League Baseball (MLB) rather than entering Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). Oda, who can throw up to 157 km/h, held a press conference on October 15 to declare his intention to seek challenges in the United States to achieve his goal of becoming a world-class pitcher.
Oda cited his experience with the U-18 Samurai Japan team as a primary influence in his decision, noting the stimulation provided by competing against top international talent. He also expressed a desire to improve his English skills early to facilitate better communication within a professional team. While he may start in the minor leagues, he is also considering university education as an option while abroad.
His decision has caused concern among NPB scouts, as Oda was considered a top candidate for the upcoming draft. Reports suggest his potential contract in the U.S. could exceed 500 million yen, significantly higher than NPB limits. This trend of elite amateur talent bypassing the domestic draft for MLB opportunities is becoming a growing concern for Japanese professional baseball.
In related baseball news, Yamato Obara of Keio University is also preparing for the upcoming draft, while Ryoya Nogami of Daisan Sangyo University has signed a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres.
