Japanese industries adopt solar carports and advanced battery tech
Industrial sectors in Japan are increasingly utilizing parking spaces to advance decarbonization and energy goals. Murata Manufacturing Group has implemented solar carports at several facilities to boost renewable energy consumption. At the Wakura Murata Manufacturing plant in Ishikawa Prefecture, a 695kW solar carport system was installed, raising the site's renewable energy consumption ratio from 0% to 21% and expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 372 tons annually.
Other initiatives include the Hakui Murata Manufacturing plant, which utilizes dual-sided panels to capture reflected light, and the Kanazu Murata Manufacturing plant, which integrated solar panels with storage batteries to power factory operations. These moves align with new sustainability disclosure standards and government targets for expanding electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.
In the automotive supply chain, Prime Planet Energy & Solutions (PPES)—a joint venture between Toyota and Panasonic—is focusing on the specialized technical requirements of vehicle batteries. Unlike consumer electronics, automotive batteries must maintain high performance and safety over a 15-year lifespan while enduring extreme temperatures and constant vibrations. PPES develops distinct battery types: high-power batteries for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) that require rapid charge/discharge cycles, and high-capacity batteries for battery electric vehicles (BEV) that prioritize energy density for longer driving ranges.
