Japanese Interval Walking Training method gains popularity

The Japanese walking method, formally known as Interval Walking Training (IWT), is gaining popularity as a structured cardiovascular exercise. Unlike traditional walking that focuses on step counts, IWT relies on specific changes in intensity.

According to personal trainer Steve Chambers, the routine involves alternating between three minutes of slow, relaxed walking and three minutes of faster, more purposeful walking. This cycle is typically repeated for approximately 30 minutes.

To manage intensity, practitioners can use the Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale. The slower intervals should aim for a 5 out of 10, where conversation is still possible, while the faster intervals should reach a 7 or 8 out of 10.
