Japanese living trends: From minimalist downsizing to full apartment renovations

Recent lifestyle features highlight diverse approaches to modern Japanese living, ranging from extreme downsizing to full-scale apartment renovations.

In an essay review, translator Riko Murai discusses the lifestyle of Haruko Oki, who transitioned from an 85-square-meter home to a 25-square-meter apartment. Oki’s approach focuses on selecting only essential items to create a comfortable, functional environment, utilizing DIY solutions like IKEA mini-kitchens to maximize small spaces.

In Chiba Prefecture, a couple named Mikaze and Takuji showcased a full renovation of an 18-year-old, 76-square-meter condominium. Their design blends industrial elements, such as exposed concrete beams inspired by architect Tadao Ando, with colorful, pop-style furniture and curved flooring transitions to create a sophisticated, international aesthetic.
